Elizabeth Howe Verrill, Director
Although certified in the Gillingham remedial method, Elizabeth is an eclectic, diagnostic teacher. For 35 years she has been exploring the ways in which children learn best. Using the Tomatis Electronic Ear in 1967/68 convinced her that it is an extraordinary tool for helping children overcome auditory processing difficulties. She also uses elements of Educational Kinesiology (Brain Gym) and Balametrics (a way of teaching balance in the process of developing hemispheric integration of eye-neek-hand coordination). She believes that nurturing the "will to be" allows development of "the will to do". Elizabeth has developed her own brand of play therapy for the passive (non-microphone) phase of treatment. The Center contains a vast array of puzzles, games, toys and books from 100 years ago to the present. Elizabeth generally works one to one with adults and children of all ages. When appropriate during the active (microphone phase) she teaches kinesthetic consonant and vowel placement, phonics and rhythmic phrasing. This approach enables her clients literally to incorporate the structure of language. Elizabeth's musical background helps her to work with singers and instrumentalists. The Listening and Learning Center is a small, informal place located in a modern wing of Elizabeth's 1840's house. A rural setting on a stream abutting conservation land provides a tranquil atmosphere. The five-college area is home to a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities. Many kinds of accommodations are available. Elizabeth is available for scheduled phone consultations.
